Not too sure what you mean by making grooves. I assume you are not
machining into the coating, but grooving or rough threading the
substrate to increase roughness in surface preparation for coating.
A popular method many years ago before the use of the more modern
day bond coat materials. If you feel the need to groove, I think
grinding would be needed as the material is too hard to be knurled
threaded by turning.
Ideally use a course alumina grit at high pressure for blasting
followed by Nickel 5% Aluminium alloy for bond coating. 13Cr
steel coatings fortunately are low shrink/low stress and are good
for thick coatings.
