• Cerium is strong reducing agent, it ignites spontaneously in air at 65 to 80 °C
• Like all rare-earth metals, cerium is of low to moderate toxicity
• Cerium has no known biological role in humans
• Cerium was originally isolated in the form of its oxide, which was named ceria
• Ceria is used in gas mantles, as polishing compounds, exhaust catalytic converters,
• Cerium used as pyrophoric alloys known as Auermetall, mischmetal and Ferrocerium, used widely for lighter or sparking flints
