RE: Distilled vs Deionized water in gun cooling system
This is from a Praxair TAFA technical bulletin.
Water Purity
Electrical conductivity of cooling water in the cables can affect arc starting. It has been documented that normal distilled water and tap water measure about
400 micro-mhos/cm [also known as microSiemens/cm (μS)] and normally do not affect arc starting. Is has also been observed that at 800 micro-mhos/cm (μS), significant arc starting problems present themselves. TAFA recommends
distilled, not de-ionized or tap water. In closed-loop systems, the simplest fix for this problem is to change the water periodically. If an open-loop system is being used and the water is too conductive, water treatment is in order. The use of filters and/or deionizers will usually lower conductivity. Maintenance performed on water distribution systems can temporarily affect water purity/conductivity.
